The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This relined canvas retains a strong tension at the present time. The general texture of the paint is fairly uniform as a consequence of the lining treatment. There are some old minor surfaces scratches. There appears to have been some strengthening to the darkest passages of the background. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination confirms this; there are sensitively applied flecks of restoration in the background, to the right edge of the wicker basket and to the shadows around the vase and below the table edge. There is some restoration to a repaired tear along the upper border of the canvas. None of these retouchings compromises the drawing or the wealth of detail in the painting. Further examination is impaired by an aged varnish.
